About Us
Biponi was inaugurated on 26th December 2001 by Kalamandir the Celluloid Chapter Art Foundation and Sri Arjun Munda (the then Tribal Welfare Minister) at Kalamandir’s premises.
On 26th March 2007 , it was redesigned as a retail store for handcrafted and earthy products in Jamshedpur, India with the objective of providing an outlet for artisans and artists from the tribal and indigenous communities of Jharkhand to market their unique art and handicrafts, which are often part of their lifestyle.
It remained a part of the NGO Kalamandir (started in 1997) , which works on multiple projects including development of sustainable livelihood of tribal/ traditional artisans at a micro level till April 2011, when it was handed over to Kalamandir Saksham SHG Federation, Jamshedpur. Over the years Kalamandir Saksham’s volunteers have succeeded in contacting and developing artisans in deep tribal hinterlands and built a sustainable economic model for them through Biponi.
The profits from the items sold at Biponi directly benefit the artisans and their families. From 23 members in 2009, Biponi now sells products made by more than 200 tribal and artisan families.
From September 2020, with the covid pandemic causing customer traffic at the store to reduce to a trickle, Biponi has started reinvented itself again by going online. With your support we hope that tribal art will continue to flourish not only in Jharkhand but far beyond.
Beautiful collection.
